Education, community , liberation through Black centered community farming.
connecting to our past, present and future
Systematic oppression has created conditions that have consistently disconnected children of color, particularly Black children, from their ancestral relationships to nature and open space. We are working to change that. We want to provide spaces that are rooted in self-love, respect for nature, and healing for Black children and the communities that support them. We are fully funded by generous donations from our community. Please give through our fiscal sponsor The Sarah Webster Fabio Center for Social Justice ( note that your donation is for Hummingbirds) here:
What we’re all about
The Hummingbirds Urban Farming Collective is dedicated to creating deep connections to land and community for Black children and the communities that help to raise them up. Our goal is to create multi generational Black centered spaces that focus on deepening connection to land. We are building community and conversations through workshops, gatherings, reclaiming public spaces, resource sharing, curriculum development and urban farming projects. We are creating opportunities to highlight the Black brilliance, ingenuity and land based wisdom that spans throughout the African Diaspora. The name is inspired by a folk tale told by Wangari Maathai about the mighty power of even the smallest among us.
We create opportunities
for connection
Hummingbirds is an aspiring black-led land-based liberation space for healing, growing, and learning. We envision land projects throughout the City of Oakland that will serve as spaces for centering children, caregivers, and educators. The spaces we are building will include opportunities for building gardening, nutrition, animal care and upkeep, and community. The children, their families and communities will be the stewards of this land, learning hard skills that will support healthy, connected and joyful futures.
Get outside and play!
Recent research points to the power of play, outdoor space, and connection to animals for the growth and development of young people. According to lifesbetteroutside.org children who play outside are “healthier physically and mentally, do better in school, have higher self esteem, have good self discipline, feel more capable and confident, are good problem solvers, are more cooperative with others, are more creative, feel connected to nature, are tomorrow’s conservative leaders.”
